Southern Baptist Boozy Banana Bread Recipe
To make my boozy banana nut bread, I found a classic, vintage banana bread recipe in my First Baptist Huntsville Southern Baptist cookbook (circa 1995). It was my dear 9th grade Sunday School teacher’s banana bread recipe and this recipe is an old banana bread recipe from the 1940’s that was served at Judson College (an old Southern Baptist college).
I new I wanted to spice up this old school banana bread recipe and give it a kick with some bourbon, but could I do this to a recipe from a Southern Baptist cookbook, from a Southern Baptist college, that was put there by my Southern Baptist Sunday School teacher (Southern Baptist are infamous for the “no alcohol” policy)?
After much prayer, I decided Jesus spiced up water by turning it to wine, so why not elevate my old fashioned banana bread from really good to heavenly great with the addition of a preferred spirit. Yes, it would be booze-infused old fashioned Southern Baptist banana bread

Why Use Old Brown Bananas For Banana Bread?
This old fashioned banana bread recipe and all homemade banana bread recipes I’ve seen call for ripe or brown bananas. But, why ripe or brown bananas, why are they the key to baking the best banana bread?
In this post Southern Living gives us 3 reasons for using ripe bananas to make our old fashioned banana bread recipe.
- Ripe bananas are softer, and therefore easier to mash and blend into your batter.
- Ripe bananas are sweeter. As the bananas ripen, the fruit converts starches to sugars, which makes them not only sweeter but more flavorful.
- Ripe bananas prevent baked goods from becoming gummy or starchy in texture, which often happens when green or under ripe bananas are used.
How To Ripen Bananas Quickly For Banana Bread
Has this happened to you? You’ve got a crazy craven for some classic banana bread and you have no ripe bananas today. What to do? Is there anything you can do to cure that crazy banana bread craven?
Yes there is, you can ripen those new shiny, brand new, freshly bought bananas and turn them into retro, brown, ripe bananas quickly. This article from Pioneer Woman gives us 2 ways we can quickly ripen those brand new bananas.
- Oven Method – Put unpeeled bananas on a baking sheet and place in a 300F oven. Bake 15 – 20 minutes, until the skin turns black.
- Microwave Method – Place an unpeeled banana, that has been pierced all over with a fork, in a microwave for 30 seconds. Next, check if the banana is soft enough. If not, continue to microwave in 30 second intervals.
Both of these methods will produce bananas where the flesh will be soft and sweet and perfect for baking our old fashioned boozy banana bread recipe or any classic banana bread recipe.
