Tips For The Best Cinnamon Walnut Coffee Cake

  • The recipe for cinnamon walnut coffee cake I used called for 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons cinnamon and 1/4 cup walnuts.  I thought it could use a lttle more nutty cinna-yum flavor, so I added an additional 2 tablespoons of sugar and walnuts and and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon.
  • Use room temperature ingredients for this coffee cake with walnuts and cinnamon and other baked goods.  Room temperature ingredients cream and blend much easier.  This creates a smooth batter, which helps make a light and tender baked treat.
  • For this walnut cinnamon coffee cake recipe or any cake recipe, using baking soda or baking powder past its prime (expiration date) can cause the cake to turn out dense.
  • For this cinnamon walnut coffee cake or any cake it is very possible to overmix your batter after you add your flour.  Tasting Table says mixing cake batter for too long can heighten the gluten levels within the batter, which in turn will result in a tougher cake, that’s not easy to chew.
  • The batter for this cinnamon walnut coffee cake recipe is thicker than most cake batters.  It should be fairly smooth, but some lumps are just fine.
  • To test if this walnut cinnamon coffee cake is done Tasting Table says, “gently press the center of the cake. If it is springy, that’s a good start. Now, use a toothpick, insert it into the cake, then pull it out. If it comes out cleanly and there’s nothing sticking to the toothpick, the cake is ready.”

How To Store Cinnamon Walnut Coffee Cake

There is one dark secret about coffee cake that I must share with you.  I’m ashamed to share this, but you must know that coffee cake dries out super easily.  Yes, when you pull that lovely gem out of the oven the moisture starts to make its grand exit.

Mashed says, to prevent the moisture’s great escape from your coffee cake, store it in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 to 3 days.  You can place it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.  However, the cold of the fridge can cause it to dry out, even if it’s technically good to eat.

If you want your coffee cake to stick around longer than a week, you’ll need to store it in the freezer.  To store coffee cake in the freezer, you’ll need to wrap it in aluminum foil and place it in a freezer bag or an airtight container.  Coffee cake will last 2 to 3 months in the freezer.
