Mom’s Apple Crisp

Really, this is my Mom’s apple crisp recipe. She made this when I was growing up and into my adulthood. It was and is a classic apple crisp recipe and it was an apple treat we loved and still love.

This simple apple dessert brought much joy to our home in the fall (and I think, probably all year) with its delicious autumn flavor and autumn spiced aroma that filled the house.

The juicy, warm, cinnamon spiced apples in this apple cinnamon crisp are topped with a buttery, sweet, crispy topping that is just mouthwatering. What a fall flavor bomb this traditional apple crisp recipe was and still is today.

Oatless Apple Crisp

My favorite part of this old fashioned apple crisp recipe is the topping that’s made with butter, sugar and flour. I’m such a topping freak that I probably use less apples than most people would for a apple crisp. This allows me more topping.

Since, I have a love affair with butter, sugar and flour, this topping is oatless. I mean, why would I want to fix what’s not broken by including another ingredient, like oats. Oats are for oatmeal or oatmeal cookies, not this apple crisp topping.

More Apples Please

If you are someone who has more of an affinity for the apples than the topping, please add more apples to this recipe. I use 6 or 7 apples; however, if you’re a real apple lover you will probably want to use 8 or 9 or apples. This is the very best apple crisp recipe either way.

Best Apples for Apple Crisp

Throughout the years I’ve made this recipe, I’ve used many different varieties of apples and all incorporated just deliciously.

However, according to this post from Betty Crocker, the best apples for apple crisp are crisp and tartly-sweet apples that hold their shape and aren’t too juicy. These apples include:

  • Empire
  • Granny Smith
  • Honey Crisp
  • Braeburn
  • Cortland

Can You Freeze Apple Crisp

Apple crisp tastes wonderful after serving some freezer time, at least mine did.

You can freeze your apple crisp in a freezer safe container or, if freezing in the pan it was baked in, cover with plastic wrap and then aluminum foil. It can freeze up to 3 months.

Why Bake This Easy Old Fashioned Apple Crisp?

Because, the juicy, cinnamon spiced apples topped with that perfectly sweetened, buttery topping are just a delightful fall (or really anytime of year) treat. Plus it’s just so darn easy to make, why not give it a bake.
