What Is A Crumble, A Cobbler And A Crisp

These 3 fruit-ilicious yums are all very similar.  Each contain a yummy, fruity base with a free form topping consisting of  butter, flour and sugar and all 3 are much like a pie, but without the pain of a pastry crust.

But, what are the differences?  What makes a crumble a crumble, a cobbler a cobber and a crisp a crisp?  This post by Savory tells us exactly what each one is.

  • Crumbles – Are believed to have their origins in England.  The classic topping is straight up flour, sugar and butter.  The butter is worked into the dry ingredients creating small crumbles.  Crumbles are most commonly served in a 2 or 3 quart baking dish.
  • Crisps – Crisps are basically crumbles with the addition of oats and nuts to the topping.  Fruit crisps are often eaten as a breakfast treat.
  • Cobblers – While crumbles and crisps are topped with a crumbly streusel-like topping, cobblers are topped with a cake-like batter or a biscuit-like dough.  The topping is dropped in spoonfuls on the fruit and bakes up to resemble a cobblestone street.  In some cases, the fruit is sandwiched between the topping.
