This recipe comes from the First Baptist Huntsville Finest Recipes cookbook (circa 1995).

I’m going to call this the 1 Peter 3:3 (Since it comes from a church cookbook I’d like to get a Bible reference in this post.) pound cake.  It is a simple, southern sour cream pound cake, not adorned with any extravagant ingredients inside the cake or outside.  

It’s what you see is what you get, pure ole time goodness.  Yes, these simple, everyday ingredients combined together are a powerful, flavorful force (There’s a sermon in here, but I want get started) that’s melt in your mouth delicious.

Easy And Versatile Sour Cream Pound Cake Recipe

This cake has only 8 ingredients and is so easy to whip up. Simply mix them together, put in a pan and bake.

Because, it is a large, dense cake it takes a little over an hour to bake. But, you can make wise use of this time by catching up on your streaming.

Since this cake doesn’t have any bold or extravagant flavors, it is safe to take to parties and gatherings. It also totes well, so it’s easy to carry.

I like to say this is one of those cakes you can take to a classy dinner party, a Baptist Church potluck or a Bar Mitzvah. Almost anything goes with this cake.

  • Eggs – Room temperature
  • Salt
  • Butter – Room temperature

  • Cream Cheese – Room temperture
  • Butter – Room temperature
  • Powdered Sugar – Sift for best results
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Milk

How To Make A Sour Cream Pound Cake

  • Combine flour, salt and baking soda
  • Cream sugar and butter until they are light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time.
  • Add flour mixture and vanilla
  • Fold in sour cream
  • Pour batter in pan
  • Bake at 325 for 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • Let cake cool in pan for 12 minutes

How To Make Easy Cream Cheese Glaze

  • Cream butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla well.
  • Add milk little by little and mix. This depends on how thick or thin you like your glaze.

Ingredients in Sour Cream Pound Cake Recipe

  • 3 cups Cake Flour
  • 6 Eggs Room Temperature
  • 1/4 tsp. Salt
  • 1 cup Butter or 2 sticks Softened
  • 3 cups Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp Baking soda
  • 1 cup Sour Cream Room Temperature
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla

Ingredients In Cream Cheese Glaze Recipe

  • 4 to 6 Tbsp Cream Cheese Room Temperature and full fat
  • 4 Tbsp Butter Room Temperature
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar For best results sift your powdered sugar.
  • 1 to 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 to 2 TBS Milk This is to thin the glaze.

Instructions

How To Make Sour Cream Pound Cake

  • Preheat oven to 325
  • Combine flour, salt and baking soda
  • Cream sugar and butter until they are light and fluffy. Should be lighter in color and less gritty.
  • Add eggs one at a time. Beating each well before adding the next.
  • Add flour mixture and vanilla
  • Fold in sour cream
  • Grease bundt or tube pan
  • Pour batter in pan
  • Bake at 325 for 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • Insert tooth pick or knife to see if done. If it comes out clean it's done.
  • Let cake cool in pan for 12 minutes
  • Release cake from pan and let it continue to cool.

How To Make Cream Cheese Glaze

  • Combine butter and cream cheese well.
  • Slowly add powdered sugar. Mix until there are no lumps and add vanilla.
  • If you'd like to thin the glaze stir in a little milk at a time, stirring after each addition.
  • You can also thin the glaze by microwaving until it's pourable. Let the glazed cake sit and allow the glaze to set before it is served.
  • Pour or spoon glaze on cake.

Notes

This makes a medium sized cake, so using a medium bundt pan or tube pan is desirable.

      I was disappointed in the cake. It did not have the traditional pound cake texture. A pound cake should have a very dense texture. This cake did not. The taste was fine and the texture was fine for a regular cake, just not a pound cake.
      I also used a “no-brand” Bundt cake pan (I think it was a Baker’s Secret bundt shaped pan). The cake “boiled” over in the oven while baking. My Bundt cake pan was on the top shelf and I didn’t want to get the kitchen ladder.

  2. My cake rose perfectly and when cook time was over it had sank, pulled away from the sides as well. It’s edible for us, but I wouldn’t dare carry it to a neighbor.
    I used a Bundt pan.
    2 weeks before I made my mamas cream cheese pound cake recipe in same pan and it was perfect.
    Any suggestions?
